WHAT IS MINIMALLY INVASIVE SPINE SURGERY AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR ME?

One of our primary focuses here at Atlantic Brain and Spine is Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery. You've probably seen it referenced elsewhere on our sight, and maybe you've wondered what it is and if it's for you. I've answered three questions below that I think will help each of you gain a greater understanding of why we believe so strongly in this approach.

WHAT IS MINIMALLY INVASIVE SPINE SURGERY?

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS) is a wide term used to describe surgical techniques that minimize tissue trauma and bleeding during surgery, ranging from angle of approach to the spine (there are several) to precision site mapping and robotic assistance.

WHAT MAKES IT "MINIMALLY INVASIVE?"

By using precise, accurate surgical techniques designed to reduce surgical impact on the site, a minimally invasive approach is defined by efforts to reduce everything from blood loss to nerve manipulation compared to standard or traditional techniques. In some cases, we can even avoid impact on the muscles of the back entirely, which is a complete game changer in terms of surgical impact.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Where to start? There are substantial benefits to a minimally invasive approach. Typically, a minimally invasive approach offers less blood loss during the operation, as well as a significantly lower risk of infection. These benefits play a large part in other positive outcomes, including a less painful recovery and faster recovery times. In fact, a traditional open spine surgery requires an average of 3-6 months for recovery, while a minimally invasive approach only requires about 1-3 months for recovery.

IS IT FOR ME?

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery isn't for everyone. Each patient is different, and so each patient will require a unique approach. If you'd like to schedule an appointment or consultation to find out if MISS is for you, visit us HERE and find out today!
